I joined the MetaLab team in 2018 as a Design Director and within less than a year I was asked to step into the VP of Design role. Over my tenure I helped the design team double in size, refine our product design and research processes, and add capabilities such as brand and motion design. I sat on the company's five-person executive team and helped shape overall company strategy and process. 

It was important to me that I stay sharp and close to the work, so I directed and actively contributed to design on over 20 products during my time at MetaLab — including products and experiences for Lululemon, VICE, Rocket Mortgage, Instacart, Logitech, Headspace and Loom.

I am proud to have left a legacy of designer growth at the company. This included tools and structures to help individuals understand and measure their own growth, and working models that help more junior designers gain experience quickly.

Accomplishments
- Led a team of 80 product designers, researchers, and design leaders across multiple geographies and timezones
- Directly managed a design leadership (director-level) team of 10
- Consulted and actively contributed to the strategy and design of over 20 products
- Created and implemented a proprietary growth framework — Pinnacle
- Created capabilities for Brand and Motion Design and helped grow a UX Research team
- Sat on the company's Executive team for two years and Management team for three years
- Advocated and provided executive sponsorship for the company's DEI workgroup

In 2017 the partners at Nelson Cash brought me on board to help build a product-focused design team in Portland, Oregon. Over the course of a year and a half I supported them in developing a strong foundational design team of eight, as well as establishing design processes and team culture.

I directed several of the agency's larger client relationships, working with executives at some of the world's largest product organizations — both creating net new products and refining existing platforms for Google Fiber, Mercari, Asana, and Evernote.

Most fulfilling for me was the ability to be closer the work and designers, which gave me the opportunity to deepen my 1:1 management and coaching skills — bringing more of myself to these relationships. This formed a strong foundation for my work at MetaLab and current leadership philosophies.

Accomplishments
- Vetted, hired, and trained a design team of eight
- Directed and led the company's largest account with Google Fiber
- Led the creation of a foundational design system for Mercari
- Turned two project-based engagements into foundational clients
- Designed and implemented a review process and growth path for designers

Nelson Cash

Octopus was founded in 2011 to meet the increasing demands of the Bay Area tech scene. I co-founded the studio, running it solo for four of the seven years it was in business. Over that time, I hired and nurtured a small but mighty team of designers and engineers from across the US and made impactful work for some of the world's best companies. 

We partnered with companies at either end of the grow spectrum — working to help establish early-stage startups like Coin, CoverHound, and Jiff and bringing innovative product thinking to larger organizations such as Google, PayPal, Airbnb, and Dropbox.

Aside from the work that we put out, I'm most proud of the culture of growth that was created. In this role, I learned the value of putting trust in designers and leading from beside rather than in front. I'm proud to say that all of these folks have gone on to be wonderfully successful in their design careers.

Maker is an independent software design and development studio based in New Zealand. I joined the team as a Junior UX/UI Designer in 2007 and cut my teeth in the world of digital product. Over the course of five years I designed (and often developed) a range of products including several large-scale logistics platforms. I worked both in-house and remotely, progressing into a lead designer role.
