Project Maintainer

As part of the consulting I did with U. S. Bank, I helped engineering teams onboard to the SHIELD Platform on Azure. 

I established, documented, and evangelized patterns and processes for using Terraform, Ansible, and Helm to deploy applications to Azure in a highly compliant, scaleable fashion. This included many technology stacks, though principle among them was Java Spring, Java EE, Dotnet Framework, and React. Still others uses Python, Go, Node, and PHP, though they were less common. 

I then supported hundreds of applications as they migrated, training up teams and building processes that were repeatable and will be used not just in Azure, but in multiple other cloud and on-prem environments over the next few years as U. S. Bank works to modernize its technology practices using internally built devops tooling instead of expensive licensed products. 

As part of this work, I also pioneered the use of Hashicorp Vault and Managed Identities to enable secure and resilient patterns for managing and rotating secrets on a regular basis. The patterns we built are being rolled out to the rest of the organization and will be in use by thousands of apps in the coming years as U. S. Bank uses devops practices to create a more resilient yet secure future for the bank. This offers unique challenges as it is not enough simply to secure it at runtime, but we also worked to secure the CICD Pipelines themselves to ensure engineers could not leverage CICD Pipelines to move laterally across the organization while automating the provisioning of the various CICD credentials needed for each application to build, scan, and deploy their applications.

I've worked across numerous teams at Ascend Learning to help them architect and deploy their software systems at scale in Kubernetes using tools like Istio, Helm, Kubernetes, Docker, F5, Hashicorp Vault, and an assortment of technology stacks - everything from Dotnet to PHP to Ruby on Rails to Java. I also implement static code analysis tools, security scanners, and an assortment of other important things. 

It is not uncommon to introduce a dev team to containerization and Kubernetes one day, help them build out docker files the next day, and a week later have their software booted up in Kubernetes.

I lead a team that designs, builds, and maintains systems to support the middle-mile moves across Target's global supply chain. This supply chain is one of the largest in the world, supporting over 1500 stores and over 20 distribution centers. The scale of work requires software designed with high degrees of reliability, security, all while architecting around complex security requirements. Systems are rolled out under conditions of extreme complexity both technically and with regards to coordinating with our business partners because we are revamping  our supply chain processes, software, and architecture completely all while supporting hundreds of stores. It is like changing a wing while the plane is flying. 

This includes supporting legacy technologies, such as IBM Websphere, and building things with new technologies, such as Kubernetes, Spring Boot, and AngularJS. The major architectural patterns involve microservices and services oriented architectures across the whole of Target's global enterprise. I regularly teach classes to my team and others while mentoring engineers in the new ways of working. I also am involved in planning and building out our team as we grow. 

Major Initiatives: There are many major architectural changes and rewrites occurring as Target modernizes and improves its supply chain to compete head-to-head with a major online retailer and major store competitor. Lead Software Engineer - Target Transportation Team

I worked on the Cartwheel team at Target, building one of the largest loyalty platforms in the world using Java Spring and Apache Cassandra in a distributed, highly available environment with multiple live data centers. 

Key Accomplishments: 
 - Lead migration of loyalty platform to microservices in the cloud to scale to tens of millions of users and distributed across data centers through a message-driven architecture.  
 - Developed and taught Java and Spring classes internally to multiple teams in Target
 - Taught at internal conferences 
 - Setup continuous integration for the RedPerks team using by setting up an integration of Github, Maven, Jenkins, and Artifactory, complete with Automated Deployments using Chef
 - Migrated application from Oracle DB to Cassandra DB 
 - Migrated application from IBM Websphere to Apache Tomcat with production-ready JMX metrics and healthchecks using Dropwizard. Setup Sensu to alert on healthcheck failures. Consul also was used for service discovery and utilized the healthchecks to make sure down nodes were automatically removed from the cluster. 
 - Setup automated testing of Database Queries using Cassandra Unit and HSQL DB.

Software Engineer - PeopleNet

At Field Nation, I worked with an innovative multidisciplinary team. When we started, we had less than 10 employees and only 2-3 senior engineers. In my original role, I did everything from assessing customer needs, designing software and user-interfaces, managing a team of developers, programming areas of the software that were advanced enough that they required a senior engineer, and even writing blog posts and email announcements for new products. Basically, when you're a startup, you did a bit of everything!

As we grew, we added many team members, including a marketing department, a product strategist, designers, and UX experts. We also added more engineers and developers, each with different backgrounds and experiences. We've integrated with many software vendors, and dealt with issues related to architecture and scalability. We've also migrated a great deal of legacy code into new architectures using templating libraries such as Twig, javascript libraries such as jQuery and Angular, and query libraries such as DBAL. I've had the opportunity to work on complex MySQL problems and become very familiar with scaling MySQL and optimizing MySQL queries. 

As we've grown, I've been exposed to and participated in many business practices, including lean startup, objectives and key results, design thinking, and various forms of agile development. I've seen the challenges that come with growth, and I've seen how to overcome them. Everyday, I'm learning something new and growing as a an engineer, a product manager, and a leader. Its full of excitement and a real rush!

Daily Deal Pros sells a software similar to Groupon, but allows customers to private-label the software. I worked with Daily Deal Pros to design, develop, and deploy a minimum viable product for selling daily deals. We dealt with complex issues, like how to whitelabel the software on different domains, how to scale the database and web servers, and how to grow the team by adding on designers and developers.

Daily Deal Pros

Senior Software Developer

Planned and developed a point of sale system that included loyalty cards, gift cards, and cash back and that is in use by 17 businesses and growing. The platform included a front-end portal for customers to search for participating vendors and deals. There was also a backend portal that could be used on point of sales devices and computers to scan loyalty/gift cards and redeem deals. It integrated with Daily Deal Pros using a SOAP API. Developed a partner website, Daily Deal Pros, which is in use by many businesses (not sure how many anymore, but there was 10+ when I left).

I also had the opportunity to write mobile apps. We wrote applications that ran on embedded point of sales systems. I also oversaw the development of an automated monthly billing system for billing customers using credit cards and ACH payments on a monthly basis.

One loyalty Network, Inc.

Splayback came to me with a legacy website with somewhat low traffic and a lot of usability problems. I worked with them to redesign the website. Within 3 weeks, the site a new and sharp design (effectively a rebrand). The traffic basically tripled. We began reworking the most important pages of the website to make them easier to use. Through usability testing, we identified ways to make them easier and cleaner, leading to higher rates of content upload and more traffic. 

We also worked on an minimum viable product of a fundraising system for teams to raise funds by selling advertising on their video page. The donors would be able to buy advertising space on their video page. They could design custom banners that would then rotate on the video page. It was popular amongst the sports teams that participated, though ultimately failed to achieve virality. 

While working for splayback, I oversaw hiring and development by a team of graphic designers and programmers. By the time I had left, had seen a 300% growth in traffic and a substantial growth in revenues.

Part-time. Maintained a police website system (http://bobcop.com) that is in use by eighteen police departments.
