Ian VanderBurgh
Director, Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at University of Waterloo
Ian VanderBurgh is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo and has been the Director of the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) since 2005.13 He is a lecturer and leads the outreach arm of the Faculty of Mathematics, promoting mathematics and computer science to students and teachers through various activities such as contests, school visits, workshops, and online programs.1
VanderBurgh is passionate about teaching and working with people face-to-face, particularly enjoying his work with teachers.1 He teaches in the Master of Mathematics for Teachers program, an online, part-time professional master's program for active high school teachers, and occasionally teaches undergraduate classes.1
In addition to his role at CEMC, VanderBurgh is involved in other campus activities:
- Chair of the University's Complementary Teaching Assessment Project Team
- Heavily involved in undergraduate admissions for the Math faculty1
Outside of his academic work, VanderBurgh is an accomplished musician:
- Pianist for the Grand Philharmonic Choir
- Occasionally accompanies the Wilfrid Laurier Concert Choir15
VanderBurgh is known for his innovative approach to mathematics and computer science education.2 He has made efforts to promote mathematics internationally, including a recent visit to India to share the "magic of math".4
