Greg Steltenpohl was a pioneering entrepreneur in the natural food and beverage industry, best known as the founder and CEO of Califia Farms, a leading plant-based beverage company.12 He passed away on March 11, 2021, at the age of 67.24
Steltenpohl's career in the food and beverage industry spanned over four decades. He first entered the natural food industry in 1980 when he co-founded Odwalla Juice Co., which became a major player in the fresh juice revolution.1 After selling Odwalla to Coca-Cola in 2001, Steltenpohl founded Califia Farms in 2010, focusing on premium plant-based beverages, particularly nut milks made from California almonds.15
Under Steltenpohl's leadership, Califia Farms grew rapidly, becoming one of the fastest-growing beverage companies in the U.S. and a recognizable brand in the plant-based category.5 The company attracted significant investment, including a $225 million funding round in 2020.2
Steltenpohl was known for his commitment to sustainability, employee empowerment, and creative corporate culture.1 He received numerous leadership awards, including induction into the Specialty Foods Hall of Fame and being named one of Goldman Sachs' 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs from 2017 to 2019.1
In September 2020, Steltenpohl stepped down as CEO of Califia Farms but remained a board member and guiding voice for the company.2 His legacy continues through the Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award, which supports innovators and entrepreneurs building a more positive, regenerative food system.36
