Dr. Eric C. Liao is a prominent surgeon-scientist and leader in the field of craniofacial surgery and research.123 He is currently the founding Director of the Center for Craniofacial Innovation at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and serves as the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery at CHOP.23
Dr. Liao's educational background is extensive. He graduated from Stanford University with B.S. and M.S. degrees, followed by M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard Medical School and MIT.23 He completed his plastic surgery training at Massachusetts General Hospital and is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.2

Dr. Liao's research focuses on the genetic regulation of craniofacial development, particularly translating human genetics to understand gene function.1 He has pioneered the use of zebrafish models to investigate craniofacial anomalies and has made significant contributions to understanding the genetic basis of various craniofacial conditions.2
Throughout his career, Dr. Liao has received numerous awards and honors, including the American Surgical Association Research Fellowship, March of Dimes Basil O'Connor Scholar Award, and the Presidential Scholar Endowed Chair at CHOP.23
