Edward Roberts
Edward B. Roberts (November 18, 1935 – February 27, 2024) was an American academic and faculty member at the MIT Sloan School of Management.1 In 1974, he became the David Sarnoff Professor of Management of Technology.1 Roberts was a leading authority on entrepreneurship.1 He died in Boston at the age of 88.1
Life and Career::
- Roberts founded and chaired the MIT Entrepreneurship Center and chaired the Sloan School’s Management of Technological Innovation & Entrepreneurship research and education programs.1
- He earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in System Dynamics from MIT.1
- He authored over 150 articles and 11 books, including "Entrepreneurs in High Technology: Lessons from MIT and Beyond".1
- Roberts was a founding member of the System Dynamics field at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT System Dynamics Group in 1958.1
- He co-founded 14 companies, including Sohu.com.12 He also co-founded and was CEO of Pugh-Roberts Associates, an international management consulting firm.1
- Roberts served on the board of advisors of Maverick Ventures Israel.1
- He was an angel investor in over 160 companies, including HubSpot and OKTA.2
- Roberts co-founded the MIT Management of Technology (MOT) Program and co-created the MIT Sloan Entrepreneurship & Innovation MBA Track.34
- He served as co-director of the MIT International Center for Research on the Management of Technology.3
- Roberts helped Charles Zhang found ITC, which later became Sohu, a Chinese Internet company, in 1996.1
Roberts was known as MIT's "father of entrepreneurship".5 He served on the faculty for 60 years and became a full professor at 33.5 According to a paper he co-authored in 2014, MIT alumni had launched over 30,000 active companies, employing millions of people and generating nearly $2 trillion in annual revenues.5
