It's hard writing software and not getting any easier.  It happens all the time that we make a heroic effort to deliver a great piece of software and as soon as we check in our masterpiece, a relentless stream of defect reports comes at us like punches.  Often times our code is strategically brilliant.  It elegantly models the problem domain, uses an efficient algorithm, and produces the correct data.  But the tactical issues are painful.  A resource leak on an exception path.  A null pointer dereference when handling an extreme corner case.  Soon all of our hard work feels unappreciated as we play a game of technical whack-a-mole trying to make a release date.  It doesn't have to be this way.

Advances in programming language design as well as strong support tools mean that we should be able to check in with confidence.  Static analysis can find a large percentage of tactical issues even before functionality is complete.  Tools that alert us of impacted test cases can prevent embarrassing regressions.  Generational fuzzing tools can ensure that corner cases are handled correctly.  Dynamic security testing tools  have come out of the dark ages and can find a high percentage of real defects without burdening us with false positives.  We're on the dawn of a golden age in our industry.

As a sales engineers, I do just about everything.  I help customers with the mechanics of running static analysis, dynamic analysis, fuzzing, and test prioritization tools.  I alter the behavior of compilers so they can parse non-standard dialects.  We integrate systems in order to ensure optimal workflows.  I read a that I didn't write at an alarming pace.  I have deep knowledge of security defects and how to avoid them.  I get to be the goto guy for the company.  I don't expect anybody to take my word for anything.
