Don Alway
Assistant Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation
Donald Alway is a senior FBI official with extensive experience in various roles within the bureau. He was appointed Assistant Director of the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Directorate at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on August 21, 2019.24 Prior to this role, Alway served as the assistant director of the FBI's Training Division.5
Alway began his FBI career in 1996 as a special agent in the Los Angeles Field Office, investigating drug trafficking organizations.1 Throughout his career, he has held numerous positions, including:
- Deputy on-scene commander in Iraq and acting legal attaché in Qatar
- Supervisor of a joint terrorism task force squad in New York
- Assistant special agent in charge of the National Security Branch in Cincinnati
- Special agent in charge of the Jackson Field Office in Mississippi
- Deputy assistant director and later assistant director of the Training Division
Most recently, in July 2022, Alway was named assistant director in charge of the Los Angeles Field Office, returning to where he started his FBI career 26 years earlier.13
Before joining the FBI, Alway worked as a deputy sheriff in Los Angeles County. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California and master's degrees from California State University at Long Beach and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.1
