Education and Early Career
Amodei completed his undergraduate studies in physics at Stanford University after transferring from Caltech. He then earned a PhD in physics from Princeton University, focusing on computational neuroscience and electrophysiology of neural circuits.45 Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University School of Medicine.15
Professional Experience
Before co-founding Anthropic in February 2021, Amodei held several notable positions:
- Vice President of Research at OpenAI (2019-2020)

Anthropic and AI Safety
In 2021, Amodei co-founded Anthropic with his sister Daniela and five other colleagues who left OpenAI due to concerns over its commitment to safety.3 Anthropic focuses on building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems while conducting frontier research on AI safety.34
Amodei has been vocal about AI risks and the need for responsible development. In July 2023, he warned a United States Senate judiciary panel about the dangers of AI, including risks related to weaponry development and control.5 He expects people to "wake up" to both the risks and rewards of AI technology within the next two years.2
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Amodei was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI in September 2023, alongside his sister Daniela.45
