Danielle Forward is the CEO and Co-Founder of Natives Rising, a non-profit organization dedicated to economically empowering Indigenous people through tech careers and entrepreneurship.14 As an affiliate of the Cloverdale Rancheria of Pomo Indians, Forward grew up in the Bay Area surrounded by both the tech industry and the challenges facing her Native American community.1
Background and Education
Forward's journey to her current role was not without obstacles. It took her ten years to earn her bachelor's degree, demonstrating her perseverance and commitment to education.2 During her college years, Forward's thesis project focused on the economic empowerment of Indigenous communities, which later evolved into the foundation for Natives Rising.1
Career Path
Before founding Natives Rising, Forward worked at Meta (formerly Facebook).5 She left her position at Meta about six months ago to fully dedicate herself to Natives Rising.1 Her experience in the tech industry, combined with her passion for uplifting Indigenous communities, uniquely positioned her to lead this innovative organization.
Natives Rising
Natives Rising, co-founded by Forward and Betsy Fore, is described as "a holistic career accelerator" for Indigenous founders and Indigenous people in tech.13 The organization offers three major programs:
- Native Women's Tech Fellowship
- Indigenous STEM Camp
- Founders Circle
These programs aim to increase representation of Native women in tech, provide STEM education, and support Indigenous entrepreneurs.1
Impact and Vision
Under Forward's leadership, Natives Rising has made significant strides in a short time. In just six months, the organization increased the number of Native women in tech from 4 to 23 and has built a network of at least 200 women from different tribes across the U.S.1
Forward's vision for Natives Rising is to create a positive feedback loop, where Indigenous people see others like them succeeding in tech and entrepreneurship, inspiring more to follow suit. As she puts it, "We are incubating the leaders of Indian country. We are empowering them with financial independence and knowledge."1
