Dan Magay is a professional musician and educator with extensive experience in woodwind instruments. He teaches private saxophone and clarinet lessons at the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA), where he has been a faculty member since 2010.1 Magay is proficient in playing flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and leads various musical groups ranging from eclectic world jazz to meditation music.2
Magay's musical education is comprehensive. He began learning clarinet at age 9 and saxophone at age 10. He studied at the University of Southern California as a music major from 1988-90, and later transferred to Berklee College of Music, graduating magna cum laude in 1994.1 Throughout his education, he studied with numerous renowned musicians and instructors.
As a performer, Magay has been active in various musical ensembles. He has played with the California Youth Symphony, the Monterey Jazz Festival Big Band, and All State bands during his high school years. After moving to New York in 2000, he formed an avant-garde jazz trio called "The Hub" that toured internationally. Since returning to the Bay Area in 2005, he has performed with several jazz orchestras and ensembles.1
Magay began his teaching career in 1991 and has continued since then, with some of his students participating in All State and County Honor Bands.1 His teaching philosophy encourages students to enjoy playing music daily and to develop active listening skills.1
