Damien Gatinel
Président chez Ceroc Association
Damien Gatinel is the President of CEROC (Centre d'Expertise et Recherche en Optique Clinique).124 He is also the Head of the Anterior and Refractive Surgery Department at the Rothschild Foundation in Paris since 2007.3 Since 2024, Gatinel has been a Professor Associé in the Ophthalmology Department at the Université Internationale Abulcassis des Sciences de la Santé in Rabat, Morocco.1 He serves as the Medical Science Director of the Laser Vision Institute (Institut Noémie de Rothschild – Hopital Fondation Rothschild).1
Gatinel's education includes a Doctor of Medicine degree and a specialized diploma (DES) in ophthalmology.1 He was formerly an intern in ophthalmology at the Hospitals of Paris, a Clinic Head at the Faculté Paris XIII–Hôpital Avicenne, and a hospital practitioner at the Faculté Paris VII – Hôpital Bichat Claude Bernard.1 He holds a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies (DEA) in Surgical Sciences from Faculté Paris XI and earned his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from Faculté Paris VII.1 In 2017, he completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Université Versailles St Quentin.1
Dr. Gatinel's primary interests lie in refractive surgery, particularly in areas such as laser profiles, high astigmatism correction, wavefront sensing, and presbyopia correction.3 His research focuses on IOL optical design, mathematical modeling of laser refractive surgical procedures, astigmatism correction, and the detection of subclinical keratoconus.3 He has co-developed the PEARL DGS formula for IOL power calculation and co-invented a multifocal presbyopia correction method, the first trifocal IOL design (FineVision IOL), and a technique for ocular marking using a smartphone.13 Additionally, he is a member of the first start-up for an artificial intelligence algorithm for subjective refraction.1
He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), a board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), and a member of the AIER Global Refractive Surgery Advisory Council.13 Since 2001, he has presented at over 500 invited lectures for learned societies and provides training and expertise for the visual optics, eye surgery, and refractive surgery industries.1 Gatinel has been ranked among the world's 100 most influential ophthalmologists, holding the 14th position in 2024.1
