This is partly true, but if you buy VTI, you are buying roughly 50-60% of the discounted future cash flows of US corporations. The remainder are private, and in the aggregate, those private companies have lower margins and slower earnings growth. It would be nice if more of the best private companies went public, though that wouldn't be helpful to the private equity / private credit industry.
