Chris Mattmann is the Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAIO) at UCLA, pioneering this role within the UC system. He collaborates with stakeholders to strategize data and artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, focusing on responsible practices and value monitoring. Mattmann's expertise spans advanced data, analytics, and AI, elevating UCLA's digital capabilities.
Formerly at NASA JPL, Mattmann served as the Division Manager of Artificial Intelligence, Analytics, and Innovative Development, as well as the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer. He led groundbreaking projects like NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory and Soil Moisture Active Passive missions. His work received funding from NASA, DARPA, and other entities.
Extensively involved in open source initiatives, Mattmann was a Board Member at the Apache Software Foundation and a contributor to Apache Nutch. He created the Apache Tika framework and has contributed to Google's TensorFlow. Additionally, he authored a book on Machine Learning for TensorFlow.
Beyond UCLA, Mattmann directs the Information Retrieval & Data Science group at USC. He has taught graduate courses on Data Science and played a pivotal role in projects exploring the Deep Web and Dark Web, notably contributing to uncovering the Panama Papers scandal, which earned a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism in 2017.
Educationally, Mattmann holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and an Executive Certificate in Climate Change Policy from Harvard Kennedy School.
