Chris will play a crucial role in identifying and leveraging opportunities for advanced data, analytics, and AI across the campus community. By fostering both internal and external partnerships, he will enhance the organization’s pursuit of data and AI solutions, significantly advancing the university's digital capabilities in support of UCLA’s mission.

As CRO of 211 LA,  Dr. Chris Mattmann provides leadership for generating future research directions and developing strategies for developing a data market around 211 LA County’s rich data holdings. Chris guides 211 staff and others in analyzing and interpreting 211’s wealth of data through ad-hoc research projects, studies and reports, and promotion of 211 LA’s data services and products. 

Chris has worked at 211 LA since 2008, helping to reimagine the agency’s internal customer call center data services and system. Chris also led the initial Google-like search development capability at 211 LA, and supported construction of a shared services architecture and technical capability that has contributed to mission success. 

Mattmann has made fundamental contributions to open source, to the development of NASA’s data processing missions, and to academia as a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Southern California.

Appointed visiting researcher in the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) institute, closely associated with JPL. Investigator on NSF proposals in the area of Regional Climate Modeling and Evaluation. Collaborated closely with Dr. Duane Waliser, JIFRESSE Fellow, and Dr. Jinwon Kim, expert in the area of regional climate modeling.

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) is a scientific collaboration between UCLA and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to improve understanding and to develop future projections about global climate change and its effect on regional climates and environments. The Institute brings together the research, education and training resources of two of Southern California’s premiere research and technology organizations to advance knowledge and monitor global warming and climate change in our State.

The Institute combines UCLA’s strength in climate modeling and remote sensing and JPL’s strength in data collection from satellites. It serves as a center for multi-disciplinary research focused on Earth systems in the Southern California region, including studies of the atmosphere, coastal ocean and land surface, and the physical, chemical and biological interactions among them. Researchers will also focus their work on the impacts of these processes on air and water quality and on the regional climate system. UCLA Institute supporters include the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Division of Physical Sciences, College of Letters and Science, and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Office of the Director, Earth Science and Technology Directorate, and Science Division have all played key roles in the formulation of the Institute.

Principal Data Scientist, Engineering Administrative Office

Manage the formulation and development of strategic non-NASA open source projects with a focus on agile software development process. Focus on pursuing projects and developing new capabilities that leverage open source software and meet strategic JPL technology needs. The office focuses on agile software development methods for non-NASA sponsors including technology infusion, prototype development and curation and identification of strategic open source software. The objective is to rapidly infuse new open source capabilities into multiple JPL thematic technology areas.

Senior Computer Scientist

This position entailed working with the COO, Executive Director, and when requested the 211 LA Board of Directors, to develop the company’s strategy in information technology systems, applications, and processes including data management, hardware architecture, and consultation to improve the company’s technology capabilities. Additional responsibilities include supporting the organization’s cross-disciplinary research and development of programs in data intensive informatics for information and referral services. The CTO assisted the COO, Executive Director and Board of Directors in generating future development directions and developing strategies for advancing data intensive informatics research agendas related to all domains pursued by 211 LA County The position also consulted on developing and leading new high impact research strategies to create next generation data intensive technologies, and the transition of these concepts to be deployed within the national/international community.

As CTO I led informatics and data management, led research, developed new technologies and capabilities, authored publications and, interacted with funding sponsors, and provided mentorship and career growth opportunities for staff.
