Professor of Spanish Linguistics and Community-engaged Learning at University of California, Los Angeles
Carla Suhr, PhD, is a faculty member in the Spanish and Portuguese Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she serves as the Co-Director of the Study Abroad Program in Spain. She joined UCLA in 2016 after completing her PhD in Intercultural Communication and Cognition at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Her dissertation focused on the interlinguistic lexical study of emotive stereotypes.1
Dr. Suhr's academic interests lie in the integration of culture, language, and cognition, particularly in enhancing cross-cultural communication and inclusive teaching practices. She has extensive experience in Spanish linguistics and community-engaged learning, having worked for over 15 years in various educational settings, including the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the University of New Haven. Notably, she co-founded the IDESLI International Institute of Linguistics in San Francisco, where she directed language courses and teacher training programs.12
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Suhr directs the Community-Engaged Learning Program at UCLA and has received recognition for her mentorship of undergraduate students involved in community-engaged research. Her research currently focuses on cognitive processes related to language and identity, as well as strategies for second language acquisition.1
