I was an intern on the consumer team where I covered retail companies. I worked on all types of stories, both short and long, and reported on anything from a company's quarterly earnings to the bankruptcy of RadioShack. I wrote two longer, retail columns that were enterprise pieces, one looking at how fitness companies were seeing competition from smaller workout studios, and another how outlet malls were creeping closer to cities.

I spent the summer interning for the projects and investigations team where I had a long feature story published looking at the Daymond John Academy, a new program for entrepreneurs founded by one of the judges from ABC's show, "Shark Tank." I also helped with data research about hospital statistics for a larger series that was published.

I spent the summer interning on the paper's business desk where I reported on the Kansas City area including a large feature on various tech start-ups. I also worked on a few projects, including a large investigation looking into the use of gaming revenue for a Kansas City suburb that produced a host of financial problems. I gained experience with open-records requests, state audit reports and trying to sort through FERPA through my work on both projects.

I maintain a blog with my twin sister on her time spent in the U.S. Army and now her current deployment to Afghanistan.

My job required me to be familiar with the ins and outs of the state budget and what area representatives, senators and city officials were doing.

As an assistant editor, I edited most of the blogs for the newspaper's website and on production nights was responsible for editing overflow content for various sections of the paper. As a staff writer, I did three different in-depth projects for the paper covering deferred campus maintenance and how companies could access college students' directory information.

I worked as an editor for The Mash helping to manage its partnership with the Chicago Bureau at Northwestern University. I worked with high-school writers on their investigative and in-depth pieces and helped guide their reporting.

As a writer, I also wrote about college and topics that would be of interest to Chicago-area high school students. Most of my pieces were on advice for high school students on financial aid, spending money and the college experience in general. During my last year of high school, I was also a staff writer for the paper, where I covered a host of different topics.
