Hosted daily public affairs show focused on the Pacific Northwest, leading energetic, purposeful conversations about everything from politics to hip-hop to pickling with a raft of interesting people. Provided editorial guidance to program production, condensed in-depth research into clear, colorful storytelling. Produced well-received series on Northwest writers, plus special miniseries on other topics. Wrote "behind the scenes" blog posts and created online additions to programs. During my time there, TOL won several national awards, including sharing in a Peabody to OPB News for the series on the economy, "Hard Times."

Spent an amazing year at Stanford with a dynamic group of fellows seeking to understand and shape journalism's next direction. My academic focus included studying Islam and Middle East history. Also learned how to really swim laps and to weld. Made an awesome sculpture paying homage to new mothers that showed at the 1169 Gallery.

From the doorstep of a terrorist suspect in Hamburg to reporting live from St. Peter's Square as Pope Benedict XVI was selected – as NPR's Berlin correspondent stories took me from Finland to Moldova, from Ukraine to France, and everywhere in between. I also travelled regularly to Iraq during the first two years of the war. I reported and wrote breaking news and feature stories for all NPR programs, plus contributed online content. Enterprise reporting include obtaining and assessing the then confidential "Sunni Plan" of the temporary government in Iraq, tracing the response to climate change in Europe, following migration and other cultural shifts in the reunited EU.

As a general assignment NPR reporter I was often on air with two different stories in one day. One of my biggest personal challenges was knocking on the door of the widow of Joseph Cureen, one of the postal workers who died of anthrax inhalation after 9/11. I'm still proud of how my profile of him turned out. Much of my work on 9/11 and after focused on the airline industry. I also covered the FCC, Enron, agricultural policy, and welfare reform. I initiated reporting to explore how policies created in Washington work on the ground outside the beltway. Served as trainer for young journalists through NPR's 	“Intern Edition” program. In March 2002 I was assigned as a special joint correspondent for NPR and NOW with Bill Moyers (PBS). Our emphasis was on investigative storytelling; the program built a highly collaborative work environment.

FSN is a privately held media company. Based in the DC office from 1998 to 2000, I reported for multiple TV and radio programs around the world,  including Marketplace, Minnesota Public Radio, Nightly Business Report, South African Broadcasting, Radio New Zealand, etc. Our emphasis was on tailoring news and feature stories to match the character and interests of our clients. I also worked as a reporter in FSN's Moscow office from 1994 to 1996.

Produced award winning daily public affairs talk show, "Which Way, L.A?" with Warren Olney, a substantive show that helped shape the political landscape of Los Angeles, as well as a place to discuss national and international issues. I was responsible for idea generation and editorial guidance during production, as well as producing individual programs, managing producers and volunteers, and running the live show. I instituted a new work-flow system that made it easier to focus the multiple leads that go in to producing a program. WWLA won multiple awards during my time there.

For much of this time, I worked as a correspondent for Feature Story News, reporting for many different radio and TV programs around the world. I also served as a research assistant in the LA Times Moscow bureau and wrote freelance features for the LA Times and the Moscow Times.

I learned radio on the reel-to-reel machines at KBOO, a community station in Portland that is almost entirely volunteer run. After volunteering with the news department for two years, I served as interim director of the morning news program. Responsibilities included training and managing volunteers, and doing any task necessary to make the daily news show happen.

In the early 90s hundreds of immigrants from the former Soviet Union came to Portland. My job description was to help the Russian-speaking parents of public school children understand the education system here and teach the parents English. In reality, I managed everything from cultural differences about child rearing to balloon mortgages. And taught the parents English!
