Brian Voerding is a notable figure in community development and nonprofit leadership in Minnesota. He is the founder and former executive director of Engage Winona, a social-change nonprofit aimed at fostering equitable access and empowering community voices in economic development for the Greater Winona area. Voerding served in this role from 2017 until 2021, during which he directed operations, fundraising, and public engagement initiatives, significantly expanding the organization's impact and budget during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic.124
Before his tenure at Engage Winona, Voerding was the editor of the Winona Daily News from 2011 to 2017. In this capacity, he managed daily operations and led efforts to create a collaborative model for community journalism focused on solutions rather than conflict. His background in journalism complements his extensive experience in community facilitation and organizational development.123
Voerding holds a master’s degree in organizational leadership from St. Mary’s University and undergraduate degrees in behavioral psychology and music from Hamline University. He is also a graduate of the Blandin Foundation’s Community Leadership Program, which equips leaders with strategies for rural community development.24
In November 2023, he transitioned to the president of the Initiative Foundation, where he continues to advocate for economic opportunities and community growth across Central Minnesota.24 Voerding resides in the greater St. Cloud area with his family and enjoys activities such as reading, writing, playing music, and outdoor pursuits.2
