O'Rourke served as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 16th congressional district from 2013 to 2019, gaining national attention during his political career, particularly during his campaigns for the U.S. Senate and the presidency.
Early Life and Education
O'Rourke grew up in a politically active family; his father was a local businessman and Democratic politician. He attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and later graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English Literature. While at Columbia, he was involved in music as a bassist for a punk rock band named Foss.13
Political Career
O'Rourke began his political career on the El Paso City Council, where he served from 2005 to 2011. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 after defeating long-time incumbent Silvestre Reyes in the Democratic primary. Although he lost that race by just 2.6%, he made history by receiving the most votes ever for a Democrat in Texas.123
In March 2019, O'Rourke announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election but suspended his campaign later that year due to insufficient support.13 He then ran for governor of Texas in 2022 but was defeated by incumbent Greg Abbott.45
