Published articles in The New York Times Magazine,  Intercept, New Yorker.com, and Mother Jones. Earned a small piece of a Pulitzer in 2017 as part of a team of reporters working on the Panama Papers, and have also served as story editor for that same organization, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Authored three books for Simon & Schuster's MASTERS AT WORK series (Becoming a Venture Capitalist, Becoming an Ethical Hacker, Becoming a Sports Agent) and have ghost-written two more. I've ghosted dozens of articles and posts and serve as a kind of on-demand Chief Story Officer for one client, helping them discover and tell their story to the wider world.

I started off covering Silicon Valley. A fun time: Google going public, the emergence of Facebook and social media, a rebirth after the nuclear winter that followed the dot-com fall. While on the tech beat, I won a Loeb award and also one for deadline journalism from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005 and I moved to the National Desk, where  I spent eight months in New Orleans as part of the paper's "storm team." Next: staff writer for Sunday Business, then special projects. I took a buyout in 2008 to return to books and long-form journalism.
