Bamber Gascoigne

Bamber Gascoigne (1935–2022) was a renowned British television presenter, author, and historian. He is best known as the original quizmaster of the BBC's University Challenge, which he hosted from 1962 to 1987. His polite yet firm questioning style and catchphrases like "Your starter for ten" made him a beloved figure in British television history.124
Born on January 24, 1935, in London, Gascoigne was educated at Eton College and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. He later attended Yale University as a Commonwealth Fund scholar. Initially aspiring to be an actor, he turned to writing and theater, with his first musical, Share My Lettuce, performed in London's West End.12
Beyond University Challenge, Gascoigne created documentaries such as The Christians and The Great Moghuls and authored numerous books on history and art. He also founded HistoryWorld, an online history encyclopedia.14 In 2014, he inherited West Horsley Place, a historic estate in Surrey, which he restored and transformed into a cultural hub featuring an opera house.3
Gascoigne was married to artist Christina Ditchburn for 57 years. The couple had no children. He passed away on February 8, 2022, at the age of 87 in Richmond, London.13
