My newest article for @CoinDesk is about what it might look like to privatize the funding of public goods.
If you're not familiar with the concept of public goods, think the taxes that go towards paying for the roads, tunnels, bridges, libraries, and access to clean air we have in the regular world. And then try to think about what the equivalent would be when it comes to open source software.
Currently, this concept runs primarily through charitable giving, but if we're to actually move towards a world where these necessities are prioritized, I ideated what it would look like to create a capitalist model of privatizing the investment in these resources.
A necessary resource being underfunded over time simply won't work for the ecosystem. While many are focusing on solutions, I brought one up that may prove to be quite contentious for some folks.
It's not to say I believe this approach is entirely full proof, but there are ways to build it in for an experiment in seeing if we can better fund public goods this way.
Will be giving a talk later today at Consumer Day.
