The Joint Polish Investment Fund (JPIF) is the first Polish Venture Capital Fund that will focus exclusively on Life Science opportunities. NOXXON Pharma is a biotechnology company developing a promising new class of therapeutics called Spiegelmers, which are oligonucleotides made from the L-stereoisomer of RNA. I acted as the first operational General Manager of Innovative Technologies Neuherberg GmbH (ITN) which changed its name to Ascenion in 2001. I was heavily involved in the incorporation and set up of this company. Ascenion acts today as a marketing partner to research institutions of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (http://www.helmholtz.de/), for example, Helmholtz Center Munich (formerly: GSF - National Research Center for Environment and Health GmbH), which licenses patents and fosters start-up companies.

As deputy head almost from the beginning I was not only involved in the formation of my own research group but also the strategy, structure and representation of the entire institute to the outside world. The institute grew from initially less than 10 FTEs to its peak with around 70 FTEs including service and junior research groups. I attracted substantial grant money to the institute and structured the interaction with clinical projects involving the pharma industry. 
My main scientific fields of expertise and interest were: molecular mechanisms of malignant transformation, escape of the cancer cell from immune surveillance and gene therapy. My interests touch upon the following scientific disciplines: virology, immunology. oncology, and molecular biology. Despite the fact that I left academia in 1996, my last coauthored scientific publication appeared in 2004.

The institute had several objectives: (i) Clinical virology i.e. diagnostics and consulting of clinical physicians in virological questions, (ii) teaching microbiology and (iii) basic research. AP contributed to all three. I was responsible for several clinical diagnostic units (HIV, EBV, among others), as well as the assessment and reporting of all laboratory results towards the clinicians. Scientifically I was interested in viral oncology and oncogene activation. I also successfully attracted substantial grant money to the institute. I had already started to work on my thesis as medical student at the institute in 1981. From the beginning I was interested to learn the modern methods of molecular biology (recombinant DNA technology etc.) and introduce them into medical application.
