Alexander Stewart

Alexander Stewart is a filmmaker, curator, and educator currently serving as the director of the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).15 He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has had a successful career in experimental animation.3
Stewart's short films have been screened internationally at prestigious events such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, and Image Forum in Japan.3 He is also the co-founder of the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation, which he started in 2010 with Lilli Carré.23
Prior to his current role, Stewart held positions at CalArts as an Assistant Professor from July 2010 to September 2016 and as a Visiting Instructor in Animation & Digital Cinema from July 2007 to July 2010.4 His work focuses on abstract animation and unconventional character animation, and he is known for his curatorial approach that challenges traditional animation conventions.23
