Alex Rose

Alexander Rose is a renowned industrial designer with a passion for building innovative, all-mechanical structures that challenge our perceptions of time and longevity. He has been working alongside Danny Hillis for over two decades to construct a 10,000 Year Clock that will stand as a monument to humanity's long-term thinking. Alexander has become a sought-after speaker on the topics of sustainable design, technology, and long-term planning, and has addressed audiences at TED Conferences, corporations, and government agencies around the world.
As the executive director of The Long Now Foundation, Alexander has founded several innovative projects that strive to foster a culture of long-term thinking. These projects include The Interval, The Rosetta Project, Long Bets, Seminars About Long Term Thinking, Long Server, and many others. He has also played a significant role in curating speaking series' at venues like The Interval and The Battery SF, as well as advising the METI project.
Alexander's professional background is as diverse as it is impressive. As an industrial designer, he has earned patents for his work on the 10,000 Year Clock and other projects. He was also an artist in residence at Silicon Graphics Inc. and a founding partner of the robotics company Inertia Labs. Alexander is also a six-time world champion in the field of combat robotics, having designed robots that have appeared on the hit TV show BattleBots. Additionally, he has built large-scale pyrotechnic displays for the Burning Man festival, robotic bartenders, and other innovative and dangerous machines throughout his career.
Alexander has a bachelor's degree in industrial design from Carnegie Mellon University, where he was the lead designer for a record-setting human-powered vehicle team. He is an expert in project management, design optimization, and problem-solving and is known for bringing together disparate technologies to create something truly unique. Alexander currently lives in Sausalito, California, where he enjoys mountain biking, climbing, and participating in mountaineering activities.
