Co-founder and CTO at Fathom; spends time thinking about flooding, climate and risk

I am a member of the team that formed Fathom out of the University of Bristol hydrology group in 2013. Our mission is to create the most detailed, accurate and comprehensive flood risk data globally, data which today are being used by numerous groups worldwide to transform risk assessment, planning decisions, emergency preparedness and disaster response.  As CTO, I lead our research and model development team.  Due to our significant focus on peer-reviewed research as a means of validation and thought leadership, I also continue to play an active role in the academic sphere with over 1600 citations as of 2021.As one of the company co-founders and directors, I serve on the company board and play a central role in defining and implementing our business development strategy.

My research focus is on regional to global scale flood hazard models.  I am particularly interested in the translation of recent academic developments into commercial, governmental and NGO applications.

Postdoctoral Researcher

NERC-CASE PhD with the Willis Research Network: Understanding uncertainty in future flood risk for the insurance and reinsurance markets using a catastophe model frameworkThe first half of my thesis focused on the development of a detailed flood catastrophe model for Dublin, Ireland.  State of the art environmental models developed at the University of Bristol were coupled with vulnerability and loss modelling methodologies consistent with those employed by Willis and the wider CAT-modelling industry to provide a model that is both transparent and powerful.  The completed model was calibrated using real historical data and used for a range of experiments examining the uncertainties and limits inherent to such a methodology.  Following this, we shifted scale to focus on the problem of unmodelled flood risk at the global scale.  The first variant of our global flood hazard model was developed in partnership with Dr Andrew Smith, with my work centred on the development of the hydraulic model framework.  The methods that we developed and published as part of this work have subsequently been developed further to form the core of the Fathom Global Flood Model framework.

Willis were the industry sponsor of my NERC-CASE PhD described above.  The partnership involved knowledge transfer between academia and industry, with work placements at Willis helping to ensure that the project remained aligned with the requirements of industry.
