Karen Smythe, a resident of Guelph, Ontario, is a novelist, short-story writer, and writing/editing consultant with a focus on health professions. She completed a full-time post-graduate certificate program in creative writing from Humber College with distinction in 2015. Karen has diverse professional experience in senior management positions in regulatory and post-secondary sectors, including roles at the University of Regina, International Language Institute, UPEI, and the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. She is an expert in administrative law, policy development, continuing professional development, quality assurance theory, and professional self-regulation, with a keen interest in labour mobility and licensure.

Karen holds a PhD in English Literature and a B.A. in Biology and English from the University of Western Ontario. She also studied at the Alternative and Independent Study Program in North York. Her administrative specialties include quality assurance theory, policy development, and professional self-regulation.

She is currently working as a writer/editor at iComp Consulting Inc. Other previous work experiences include being the senior partner, standards & policy at The College of Veterinarians of Ontario, quality assurance coordinator at the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario, registrar at the University of Prince Edward Island, registrar of Algoma University, managing director, continuing education at Acadia University, administrator at School of Physiotherapy, Dalhousie University, freelance editor at The Write Place, and assistant professor at the Department of English at the University of Regina.
