Middleton's career started as a network security engineer based in Philadelphia, traveling across the U.S., the U.K., Mexico, Israel, and China. He later became the head of information technology at LivePerson in 2010 before co-founding and leading Backstory, a venture-backed startup. Middleton was then appointed as an early executive at WeWork in 2011, serving as a co-founder of WeWork Labs, a global startup incubator, and running WeWork X, M&A, startup investments, business and digital product development, and inside sales.

Middleton has also been an active angel investor, advising many early-stage technology startups, including Eight, Camelot Metrics, Thunderclap, Morsel, Uptown House, and many others.
