Driving the Future of Trucks at PACCAR, Maker of Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF Trucks

As General Manager, I lead PACCAR's Silicon Valley office. We collaborate with innovators from around the world to imagine and create the future of trucking. Our Innovation Center works closely with all of PACCAR's divisions to help guide our initiatives and best leverage the joint learnings.

At PACCAR's Silicon Valley Innovation Center, we are partnering with cutting edge innovators to build not just the trucks of the future, but also the transport related businesses of the future.

I have had the unique experience of helping to start up the Innovation Center, defining the business development function for the office. In the first year of the center, I identified key areas of opportunity, reached out to hundreds of start ups, and quickly built connections with dozens of the highest potential start ups for collaboration with PACCAR. Our scouting takes place around the world, in places including Silicon Valley, Israel, and of course my alma matter of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our scope is global.

The results of this activity are several high value proof of concept projects from which PACCAR continues to learn volumes. On an ongoing basis, I scan the landscape for great new companies for PACCAR to work with, and introduce them to my PACCAR colleagues in our many divisions around the world.

In addition, I lead the business side of our work in autonomous trucking. I am charged with surveying the landscape to identify the best autonomy partners for PACCAR, and then finding ways for us to work together. These deep collaborations are critical to our joint success, and are based on the relationships that we build over time.

We are actively exploring new business models and opportunities that are arising from advances in technologies such as machine learning, paired with fundamental enabling technologies around sensing and connectivity. It is an exciting time.

Given the rich interactions we have with the tech ecosystem in Silicon Valley and around the world, I have gained an inside view from which to see trends early and spot new opportunities for PACCAR.

I really enjoy being a part of this ongoing office “start up,” helping to build the team and establish our presence here in Silicon Valley.

Honda Innovations Silicon Valley (HISV) is the open innovation arm for Honda's global R&D operations. Honda Innovations serves as a catalyst to accelerate Honda’s global research and development (R&D).

-  Identify breakthrough new technology to incorporate into Honda's portfolio via partnerships and POC projects.

-  Build strong relationships with Honda product groups to understand needs and effectively communicate possibilities.

-  Manage all aspects of the partnership and investment cycle: scouting, opportunity exploration, due diligence, deal structure, negotiation of agreements, transfer of relationship to product group.

-  Represent Honda in the global tech ecosystem to build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships. I work with innovators, startups, incubators, accelerators, venture capital investors.

-  Identify emerging technology trends and share vision for opportunities with key influencers within Honda. Make sense of the many emerging high tech innovations.

Strategic Alliances

I provided strategic business services for medium sized Silicon Valley clients, revenue to $50MM.  Representative engagements included technology assessment, competitive analysis, customer needs appraisal, go-to-market strategy and business negotiation support. Industries of focus include automotive, electrical, and industrial. Typical projects involved researching a problem, identifying critical information, and then presenting findings in a way that is both insightful and actionable.

Mergers and Acquisitions
-  Drove valuation model creation and due diligence of several acquisition targets. Worked closely with VP of M&A, CTO, CFO, and CEO on pre-offer investigation for eventual $94M acquisition of OASIS SiliconSystems, a leading provider of MOST networking solutions for automotive.
-  Accurately predicted the demise of a much-hyped new technology, and successfully steered the company away from making a sizable related acquisition.

Analysis of USB Storage Market
-  Analyzed market situation to create strategic direction for USB flash drive controller and USB/ATA bridge controller. Worked closely with sales force to determine needs and drive design wins.

Strategic Support for Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing
-  Recommended company strategy for approaching emerging USB markets. Successfully charted the future direction of several segments of the consumer electronics market.
-  Conducted assessment of internal software development processes, resulting in increased focus on software testing.

Business Development Manager

- Planned and executed Japan market research plan, including customer visits, focus groups, and competitive product reviews.
- Built and pitched product plan to meet the needs of Japanese users.
- Led initial user interface development of the Microsoft Journal, including user interviews, prototyping, and usability testing.
- Coordinated between senior management, marketing, hardware designers, software designers, programmers, testers.

Senior Program Manager, Tablet PC

- Led a cross disciplinary team of 30 to plan, develop, maintain <a href="http://Encarta.com">Encarta.com</a> through rapid customer growth.
- Turned around struggling operations team by clarifying responsibilities, hiring more staff, and mentoring team leader.
- Formed team to invent and build software that enabled natural language search. This patented technology, US 6,775,666, leveraged Encarta’s extensive indexes. Walt Mossberg called it “the best thing about the new MSN search.” (WSJ, 11/11/04.)

Group Program Manager, Encarta.com

- Directed R&D activities for Asian versions of Excel ’97 & 2000, which contributed US $300M/yr, 2.5% of total Microsoft revenue.
- Coordinated R&D team with staff in Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul, Taipei, Redmond, plus key stakeholders for Europe and the Middle East.
- Conducted over 50 customer visits in 10 countries across Asia and Europe. Negotiated feature requests from global offices.

Lead Program Manager, Microsoft Excel

- Coordinated product team to prototype, usability test, design, and develop v1 and v2 of consumer productivity apps such as the list manager.
- Worked in a highly collaborative and creative team environment that included interaction designers, artists, and musicians.
-  In addition to app leadership responsibilities,	managed a range of areas including performance, content acquisition, OEM relationships, release management, and setup.
