I have practiced in civil litigation acting for companies, state-owned enterprises and high-net-worth individuals with primary care of matters in the Supreme, District and Local Courts of NSW (including Court of Appeal), Supreme Court of SA, Federal Court, as well as other federal courts and tribunals.

Matters included:
* equitable claims including seeking declaratory relief to recognise constructive and resulting trusts, defending trustees against allegations of breach of fiduciary duty, bringing a claim for knowing assistance under the second limb in Barnes v Addy,  defending claims of wilful default, defending claims of breach of confidence
* contract and related commercial disputes including suing for goods sold and delivered, resisting quantum meruit claims, suing for money had and received, resisting claims for specific performance, disputes over implied terms of merchantability and fitness for purpose, breaches of the Australian Consumer Law, misleading and deceptive conduct, and breaches of contract
* property-related disputes including breach of contract for sale of land and recovery of deposit, resisting claims for specific performance, disputes about off-the-plan contracts and sunset dates, applications to extend the operation of caveats on land, purchase price resulting trusts over parcels of land, and misleading & deceptive conduct in the sale of commercial property
* succession disputes, disputes about the administration of deceased estates (particularly where the estate is alleged to have assets overseas), applications for revocation of probate, passing of accounts and commission, and family provision claims
* defamation and other personal injury claims
* insolvency disputes including applications to set aside statutory demands and winding up applications for failure to comply with statutory demands
* residential home building and construction disputes
* retail tenancy disputes
* disciplinary matters and professional conduct complaints

The JSLG was an independent Indonesian institution that conducted research, consultancies and public interest programs to increase the capacity of current and future leaders in the areas of constitutionalism, good governance and the rule of law.
Duties included:
  •. exercising initiative to develop effective law reform programs
  •. liaising with donors and stakeholders
  •. drafting persuasive program proposals to secure donor funding
  • developing a program for training in judicial review procedure for lawyers with disabilities

Duties included:
  •  conducting legal research
  •  summarising and analysing Constitutional Court decisions
  •  translating, editing and proof reading documents
  •  contributing to a book of the Court’s jurisprudence

Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia

Local Governance Innovations for Communities in Aceh (LOGICA2) was a $16 million project under AusAID’s Australia Indonesia Partnership, delivered by Coffey International Development, aimed at promoting participative needs-based governance in Aceh.
Duties included:
  •  interviewing local government officials and community members
  •  facilitating meetings of local staff and village meetings
  •  authoring a booklet of success stories

Local Governance Innovations for Communities in Aceh Phase 2 (LOGICA2)

Short Term Consultant

I was part of a research and analysis team under the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice (AIPJ). We advised AusAID and Indonesian government and non-government stakeholders on ways to improve Indonesia’s system of executive and judicial review of regional regulations.
Duties included:
  •  developing a research methodology
  •  conducting in-country field research
  •  interviewing judges and government officials
  •  conducting extensive desk research
  •  developing recommendations
  •  co-authoring a final report to AusAID

Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

I was research assistant for Professor Tim Lindsey, who was then Director of the Asian Law Centre (ALC) and Centre for Islamic Law and Society (CILS), Melbourne Law School.
Duties included:
  •  undertaking overseas field research in Brunei on Islamic law for an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship
  •  contributing research on Islamic law in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei to three volumes on Islam and the Law in Southeast Asia
  •  contributing research to an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled Drugs, Law and Criminal Procedure in Southeast Asia
  •  writing research papers on request, including for legal proceedings
  •  editing chapters of academic books
