I am responsible for setting technology direction at Sensity. 

Sensity Systems capitalizes on conversions to LED lighting—a process that will affect 4 billion lights worldwide over the next few years—to create a high-speed, sensor-based, multiservice, open networking platform known as a Light Sensory Network (LSN). LSNs help lighting owners improve lighting control and energy efficiency, as well as business processes that go well beyond lighting.

By embedding networking technology and sensors within LED luminaires themselves, Sensity uses energy-efficient LED lighting as the foundation for its turnkey NetSense platform, the first Light Sensory Network implementation. By working closely with developers of software applications and services that run on the NetSense platform, Sensity enables facility and municipal lighting owners to link energy efficiency and cost savings to the improvement of business goals as diverse as public safety, parking control, asset management, and retail analytics.

Sensity is the first company that has assembled all the relevant technology expertise, process integration know-how, and strong partnerships required to make the Light Sensory Network a reality.

The role of a Sun Microsystems Distinguished Engineer (DE) is quite distinctive. Although each DE has a day job as a divisional CTO,  a product architect, or perhaps a principal investigator,  all DEs work, first and foremost, for Sun.  DEs are involved in technology issues at the highest levels of the company, including product and business planning, M&A (merger and acquisition) negotiations, strategic partnerships, and representing the company to customers, government, and the investment community.

During my 16 years as a DE, I was CTO of a software business unit, acting director of another unit, lead researcher in a SunLabs team, and architectural lead on several strategic studies. Most recently I was involved in integrating the global engineering groups of several companies acquired by Sun.

Sun Microsystems

Joined Sun Microsystems as the first development engineer hired into the newly-formed East Coast Division.  Designed and led the implementation of PC-NFS, a networking software product that sold several million copies over the next few years.  Spent two years as a software engineering manager on the innovative Sun386i workstation, building several teams from scratch.  Moved back to a technical role, and became a recognized authority on PC networking within the industry.  Represented Sun in a variety of standards activities, including work in X/Open and co-authoring the Windows Sockets ("WinSock") specification which healed the fragmentation that had characterized the PC networking market.  (By enabling the development of PC-based web browsers, this work was instrumental in fueling the explosive growth of PC-based TCP/IP networking and the World Wide Web.)

As a result of all of this work, I received the Sun President's Award.
