In addition to my full-time role at WILDSAM, I am part of four-person collective podcasting crew, creating an acclaimed independent series. Death in the West explores the history of the American West through the lens of true crime and notorious incidents. The New Yorker praised our "rigorous reporting, memorable details (a hook-handed gunman, a Prohibition-era speakeasy), and sophisticated sound design (cemetery crickets, archival interviews and songs)." Our first two seasons are available on the various podcast platforms.

I led the creative side of this boutique editorial and content strategic and tactical agency. Key projects: brand voice & tone and editorial planning for Aflac; consultancy for OpenSky city magazine titles in Austin and San Antonio; editorial and media strategy consultancy for Context Partners. Also: editing for Little Sous, the Scout-incubated start-up bringing families together in the kitchen.

I led 10-12 editors, writers, and artists to create one of the best city magazines in America and its ancillary media. 

Key projects: comprehensive print redesigns, digital editorial launches, print special-issue launches, major features, events. Awards: City and Regional Magazine General Excellence 2017 (+ many others); the magazine's chief food critic won the 2017 Craig Claiborne Distinguished Restaurant Review Award.

Portland Monthly Magazine

As co-executive editor of Portland Monthly, I collaborated with the magazine's former managing editor to form a two-person editor-in-chief office. Together, we managed 11 direct reports and the magazine's many freelancers; developed new HR and development processes; collaborated with art directors on a full-scale redesign of the magazine; and launched two new annual special issues.

I came aboard at Portland Monthly to edit the print magazine's front-of-book section, write and edit narrative features, and contribute to coverage across the board. Along the way, I was promoted to Senior Editor and assumed more responsibility for shaping the magazine and website.

Associate & Senior Editor

The Great Detective (HMH, 2015) explores the pop cultural history of the iconic Sherlock Holmes. The Renegade Sportsman (Riverhead, 2010) documents independent and alternative sports subcultures across the United States and world.

As a freelance writer/editor, researcher, and creative consultant, my projects included work for major clients for agencies like Swift, BSSP, and Cinco; copy for Nike, Mercy Corps, and Thrivent; and labors of love for Portland enterprises like Pickathon and Stumptown Printers.

At Portland's award-winning, always-feisty alternative weekly, I edited the robust music section before transitioning to the news department, where I covered tech, City Hall, and business, among other beats.
