Lucian Yates
Interim Provost and VP of Academic Affairs
Lucian Yates III is an experienced educator and administrator who was appointed interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Kentucky State University in Frankfort in 2018.1 His career in education spans several decades and includes various leadership roles across multiple states.
Dr. Yates holds a bachelor's degree in history and political science and a master's degree in history and education from Morehead State University in Kentucky. He earned his Ph.D. in curriculum, instruction, and supervision from Ohio University in 1994.12
Throughout his career, Dr. Yates has served in numerous educational positions, including:
- Dean of the Graduate School and professor of curriculum and instruction at Tennessee State University
- Dean of the School of Education at Kentucky State University (2004-2008)
- Professor of educational leadership and dean of the Graduate School at Prairie View A&M University (2008-2016)
- Teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent in various school districts
- Worked with the Kentucky Department of Education
Dr. Yates has been recognized for his contributions to education, receiving awards such as the Ohio Social Studies Teacher of the Year and the Outstanding Young Professional award.2 His expertise has been sought after nationally and internationally, including an invitation to work with teachers and principals in the former Soviet Union as they transitioned from communism to democracy.2
His research interests include administration, achievement gap, learning styles, male mentoring, and teaching students of color. Dr. Yates has consulted with schools, school districts, and non-profits on various educational topics, including restructuring, educational reform, and team building.2
