    Virginia Pichler

Doctoral Student at The University of British Columbia

Virginia (Ginny) Pichler is a PhD candidate in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia (UBC).12 She is co-supervised by Dr. Yossef Av-Gay from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Dr. William Hsiao from the Department of Bioinformatics.1

Pichler's research focuses on infectious disease genomics, combining sequencing-based bioinformatic strategies with experimental work.1 Her project is developed in collaboration with the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) programs, where she investigates:

    1. Quantifying mycobacterial antibiotic resistance by correlating drug MICs and gene mutations from whole-genome sequencing.2
    2. Studying transmission dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria using genomic epidemiology.2

Prior to her PhD, Pichler completed her Master of Science in bioarchaeology at the University of York in 2014 and her Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto in 2011.12 She has also worked outside academia for a few years before deciding to pursue her PhD at UBC.1

Outside of her research, Pichler is interested in science communication, gardening, baking, traveling, and pet care.2 She has been recognized for her academic achievements, being one of 16 graduate students to receive an award from UBC Research & Innovation in June 2021.3
