The International Institute for Art, Culture and Democracy (IIACD) is a Bengaluru based not for profit research institute. It was founded in 2008 by a multidisciplinary group of academics and practitioners with collective expertise in healthcare, education, management, design, new media arts, technology, folklore, cultural anthropology, traditional arts and crafts, vernacular architecture, cultural heritage, conservation and tourism studies. IIACD has two interdisciplinary centres: Centre for Cultural Heritage and Tourism Studies (CHATS) and Centre for Health Ecologies and Technology (CHET).

Concerned about the increasing loss of murals and other heritage arts, HAI art and cultural scholars have been researching and collaborating with designers, technologists, conservation and tourism experts in digitizing and creating awareness of the value of South Indian murals in the following Indian Digital Heritage (IDH) projects supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India:

The representation, organization and investigation of knowledge-bearing artifacts documented, annotated, narrated and digitized in both these IDH projects are enabled by multi-disciplinary methodologies of digital humanities.

The Centre for Health Ecologies and Technology (CHET) http://healthecologies.org  founded in 2009 is an interdisciplinary centre of the International Institute for Art, Culture and Democracy. Health ecologies bring together a web of interacting health systems like medical care, practitioners, hospitals and teaching institutes, healthcare providers, healthcare financers, health informatics and technologies, ancillary health services, alternate and complementary systems and psychosocial healing. At CHET, we believe that health outcomes for our communities can be improved if the diverse elements of health systems synergize and sync together. As healthcare advances are constantly upgraded and empowered by newer technologies, we harness the power of digital media and tools to enable informed choices.

This organization's experiments with child participation in democracy in Kundapur and particularly with the Makkala Panchayats all over Karnataka are in my opinion one of the most imaginative and inspired interventions I have witnessed in India in the field of development in the last two decades. The question I have often asked myself is why this is not replicated across the nation as a transformational programme. I hope the recognition of the work at CWC implicit in the Nobel nomination for the Peace Prize in 2012-2014 by the Norwegian Parliamentary Committee will provide the impetus for wider adoption of child participation as a fundamental right.

From academia to a startup to a growing company:
2000: India’s top ranked university IISc spins off faculty entrepreneurship with the creation of Strand.Over the last 15 years, Strand is established as a leading company in software product development, cutting edge contract research for pharma, and genetic testing.

A global software product company:
2003: Soochika, finding a needle in a haystack, was our first product for microarray data analysis launched world-wide. The product evolved to be the GeneSpring(R) product, the market leader in multi-omics data analysis with over 20,000 citations.

Growth of the company:
2005: Venture Capital backs Strand to create a platform for secondary and tertiary data analytics for experimental biology applications. Venture capital firms repose confidence with multiple rounds of funding. UTI Capital, Westbridge Capital, Sequoia, Medibic of Japan, and Biomark Capital have successively funded Strand in its growth path.

Clinical diagnostics company:
2012: Strand launches into clinical diagnostics and the applications of genomics to personalized medicine. Strand naturally evolved into a clinical diagnostics company, setting up labs in India and the US for advanced genetic testing. Since then, Strand has created and marketed a variety of diagnostics tests for cancer and hereditary diseases. Strand employs over 200 scientists with over 45 PhDs and MDs among them.

My affiliation with NIAS dates back to 1998 when I worked on ICT for development programmes. The Simputer Project was conceived through this affiliation (and executed at IISc). In this second phase of engagement I am working with the Humanities faculty at NIAS on aspets of digital humanities with a focus on cultural heritage assets of India.
