Valerie Cleland is a passionate marine scientist with a focus on policy, dedicated to the environment and the ocean. She holds a Master's degree in Marine and Environmental Affairs from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and International Relations from Tufts University. Valerie also studied Marine Resource Studies at the School for Field Studies in Turks and Caicos Islands and completed her IB Diploma at the United World College of the Atlantic.
Valerie Cleland has an extensive background working with various organizations. She has served as an Ocean Advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellow at the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and a Project Coordinator at The William D. Ruckelshaus Center. Previously, she has held positions such as Teaching Assistant at the University of Washington, Outdoor School Instructor at REI, and Environmental Scientist at 48 North Solutions, Inc.
In her career, Valerie Cleland has also worked as a Wilderness Program Manager at UC Berkeley, Teaching Assistant in the Biology Department at Tufts University, Head of the Backcountry Leadership Program at Camp Moosilauke, and as a Research Intern at Harvard Law School. She has been involved in various roles such as Staff Coordinator and Trip Leader at Tufts Wilderness Pre-Orientation Program (TWO), Founder/Organizer at TEDxTufts, and Program Assistant at Tufts Environmental Studies Department.
Valerie Cleland's professional journey includes experiences as an Oceans Intern at Environment Oregon, Social Media Intern at Rising Green, Facilitator at Pearson Seminar on Youth Leadership, and Marketing Intern at Cleland Marketing. She has also worked as a Junior Political Intern at the Dan Rayfield Campaign for State Senate, an Environmental Educator and Volunteer at Maine Environmental Monitoring Service, and a Student Teacher at Ashbrook Independent School. Additionally, she gained experience as a Lab Assistant at Oregon State University.
