Dr. Urs Gasser is a distinguished Professor of Public Policy, Governance, and Innovative Technology at the Technical University of Munich, currently holding key positions as the Rector of the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy and the Dean of the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology. He also serves as a Fellow at the Stanford Center for Responsible Quantum Technology.
With an impressive tenure from 2009 to 2021, Dr. Gasser previously led as the Executive Director of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and held a position as a Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School.
His research and teaching endeavors primarily revolve around governance, societal issues, and the evolving role of academia in the age of artificial intelligence. Dr. Gasser is an accomplished author and editor, having published numerous books and over 100 articles addressing digital technology and AI concerns, such as 'Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives' and 'Interop: The Promise and Perils of Highly Interconnected Systems'.
In addition to his roles at TUM and Harvard, Dr. Gasser has shared his knowledge through visiting professorships at esteemed institutions worldwide, including the Singapore Management University School of Law, the University of Zurich Faculty of Law, KEIO University, the University of St. Gallen, and Fudan University School of Management.
Dr. Gasser's extensive involvement extends beyond academia; he has served on various boards and councils, such as the Digital Asia Hub and the German Digital Council, where he was appointed by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Currently, he leads Thailand's International Policy Advisory Panel on AI and embarks on other impactful missions.
Dr. Gasser's academic journey is adorned with prestigious credentials, holding a Juris Doctor and a Doctor of Juridical Science from the University of St. Gallen, as well as a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School. He has garnered several awards and accolades for his exceptional research contributions.
