Toufeeq Ahmed Syed, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Education Informatics at the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics and McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.12 He previously served as Executive Director in Health IT at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Assistant Dean of Education Informatics at Vanderbilt School of Medicine.3
Dr. Syed is a computer scientist with expertise in Artificial Intelligence, education technology, natural language processing, and adaptive recommender systems.2 He has over 15 years of experience developing national online platforms and has led the development of innovative technology platforms such as VSTAR, QuizTime, TurnOut, and Spark.2
His research focuses on Precision Education in Healthcare and Mentoring Networks, developing AI-based national online platforms to deliver personalized education, mentoring, and career growth.2 Dr. Syed co-leads the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and serves as a Principal Investigator for the NIH-funded AIM-AHEAD program, which aims to enhance participation of underrepresented minorities in AI/ML research and reduce health disparities.3
Dr. Syed completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University from 2010 to 2012, funded by the National Library of Medicine.2 He was awarded Arizona State University's Challenges Innovator Award in 2010 for his PhD dissertation work and gave an invited TED Talk at TEDx Phoenix 2010 on Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing.2
