Timothy W. Simpson is an accomplished mechanical engineer with a focus on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, product family design and platform development, and technology-based entrepreneurship and innovation. He has a PhD and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.

Dr. Simpson has an impressive track record of achievements in academia and industry, having held various positions throughout his career. He is a monthly column writer at Modern Machine Shop, a former Director of the Additive Manufacturing & Design Graduate Program at Penn State University, and a former ADDVisorSM at The Barnes Group Advisors. Dr. Simpson has also been a technical advisor at Xact Metal, an affiliate professor of architecture at Penn State University, and a co-director at CIMP-3D: Center for Innovative Materials Process through Direct Digital Deposition.

At Penn State University, Dr. Simpson was the Paul Morrow Professor of Engineering Design and Manufacturing, the director of The Learning Factory, and a professor of mechanical engineering. He has also served as an instructor at the MIT Professional Institute, an innovator-in-residence at New Leaf Initiative, and a visiting scholar at NASA Langley Research Center.
