Thomas Tomich
Distinguished Professor of Sustainability Science and Policy at University of California, Davis
Dr. Thomas Tomich is a Distinguished Professor of Sustainability Science and Policy at the University of California, Davis, where he has been a faculty member since January 2007. He is a professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Policy and was the founding director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute until July 2020. Dr. Tomich holds the WK Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems and has played a key role in developing the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Bachelor of Science degree at UC Davis.
With a diverse background in agriculture, Dr. Tomich's research interests include agroforestry, economic development strategy and policy, hunger and food policy, and natural resource management. He has authored over 160 publications on these topics and has extensive experience working in various countries such as Brazil, Kenya, Indonesia, and the United States.
In his previous roles, Dr. Tomich served as the principal economist for the World Agroforestry Centre and as a policy advisor and institute associate at the Harvard Institute for International Development. He has also been actively involved in high-level committees and boards, including the Independent Science and Partnership Council of the CGIAR.
Dr. Tomich earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Food Research with a focus on agricultural economics from Stanford University. He also completed his Bachelor's degree in Economics at the University of California, Davis, and participated in a Junior Year Abroad program at The American University in Cairo.
Born and raised on a small family farm in California, Dr. Tomich has a deep-rooted passion for sustainable agriculture and environmental policy, which is reflected in his extensive academic and professional contributions to the field.
