Served as member of senior management team for Secretary Margaret Spellings advising on critical issues facing the department. Developed and managed legislative strategies for department including No Child Left Behind reauthorization, Higher Education reauthorization, presidential initiatives, and appropriations. Successfully negotiated legislation on top administration priorities including a significant increase to Pell Grants, creation of AC and SMART grants, the American Competitiveness Initiative, and Katrina Education Relief. Built and maintained strong and productive congressional relationships. Managed twenty-five employees, including legislative policy, congressional relations, student loan customer service, and administrative staff.

Assistant Secretary

Developed and coordinated the administration's welfare, housing, economic and community development, and family and children policies. Advised and briefed President George W. Bush and senior White House staff on these issues. Coordinated legislative and regulatory activity related to these issues within the executive branch. Represented the administration at events, meetings, and conferences.

Special Assistant for Domestic Policy

Provided executive level advice and support to HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson on key mission-critical issues, initiatives, and agency functions. Developed and coordinated major policy initiatives in consultation with the White House, senior management, and other federal agencies. Managedspecific policy portfolio, including inter-agency disease prevention efforts, general public health matters, HIV/AIDS, international and global health, and early childhood issues. Oversaw scheduling and advance, public affairs, and global health offices within the Office of the Secretary.

Appointed by then-Governor Tommy Thompson and confirmed by the Wisconsin State Legislature. Directed office with responsibility of advising Governor, and his cabinet and senior staff, on federal administration and congressional issues affecting Wisconsin.

Served as spokesperson for the association. Developed and coordinated press strategy among governors' staffs and NGA staff. Organized and coordinated media logistics at two major national conferences each year. Planned and organized annual professional development seminar for governors' press staff. Performed daily press activities for association.

Served as spokesperson and principal media contact for Congressman. Worked with personal,committee and leadership staff to coordinate press coverage of legislative activity. Performed daily media functions. In addition to press duties worked as policy aide on women's issues and government reform and oversight issues.
