Syd Butler is the founder and former president of Frenchkiss Records and a musician.13 He is also a founding member of the band Les Savy Fav and was the bassist for the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers from 2014 to 2024.34
Butler was born on August 15, 1972, in Memphis, Tennessee, and spent most of his adolescence in Washington, D.C.3 He attended the Rhode Island School of Design.13
In 1999, Butler started Frenchkiss Records in New York City to release Les Savy Fav’s second album, The Cat and the Cobra.23 The label has been responsible for discovering artists such as The Hold Steady, Local Natives, The Dodos, Bloc Party, and Passion Pit.23 In September 2014, The Orchard acquired Frenchkiss Records.25 Butler became VP of A&R at The Orchard and President of Frenchkiss, where he continued to sign and develop bands for Frenchkiss and discover talent for distribution by The Orchard.2 In early 2012, Frenchkiss Records launched the distribution company Frenchkiss Label Group.5
Butler has also been involved in musical side projects, including Juiced Elfers, Desiderata, and Office Romance.3 In September 2024, Butler was promoted to Head of A&R at the music publishing company Killphonic Rights.3
