As a public international and human rights lawyer, Susie has specialized expertise in human rights and governance of technology, oversight, human rights and security, and human rights and governance challenges for small islands.
With over twenty years of experience in strategic, advisory, and leadership roles within international human rights and legal policy, she has worked for reputed organizations like Amnesty International, the OSCE, EU, UN, and holds public oversight roles.
Currently holding positions as an Associate Tenant at Doughty Street Chambers, Research Fellow at Roehampton University, and Interception of Communications Commissioner for the Isle of Man, Susie Alegre is actively involved in various realms of human rights and legal policy.
Her areas of interest encompass digital rights focusing on freedom of thought and AI, combating online disinformation, human rights oversight frameworks, accountability, combating corruption, human rights in small island contexts, and EU citizenship and human rights.
Susie Alegre is dedicated to developing innovative strategies to promote human rights and rule of law across diverse contexts and is a vocal commentator on the impact of new technologies on the right to freedom of thought.
As the Founder and Director of the Island Rights Initiative, a non-profit think tank and consultancy, she aims to bring innovative thinking on international human rights policy to support small island communities globally.
Having a deep understanding of the challenges faced by small jurisdictions and island communities, she actively engages in research to support them internally and in their interactions with the outside world.
Educationally, Susie studied Law at Université De Nantes and the Inns Of Court School Of Law, also obtaining a Master Of Arts In Philosophy, French from the University Of Edinburgh School Of Philosophy, Psychology And Language Sciences.
Her extensive professional background includes roles like Deputy High Court Judge at HM Courts & Tribunals Service, Founder and Director at Island Rights Initiative, International Human Rights Lawyer, Author and Consultant, Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, and various other key positions in international organizations, consultancy, and academia.
