Susan Post

Susan Post is the owner of BookWoman, a feminist bookstore located in Austin, Texas. She has been a pivotal figure in the store's history, which began in 1975 as the Common Woman Bookstore, a collective founded by 13 women aiming to provide a space for feminist literature. Over the years, the store has moved several times, eventually settling at its current location on North Lamar Boulevard in 2008.123

Post is the last remaining member of the original collective and has played a crucial role in maintaining the bookstore's mission of promoting feminist and queer literature, especially during times when such works were often marginalized in mainstream bookstores. She emphasizes the importance of providing access to diverse voices and literature that resonate with the LGBTQ+ community.24

Under her leadership, BookWoman has not only survived various challenges, including vandalism and rising rents, but has also become a beloved community hub. Post's commitment to supporting local authors and engaging with the community has helped the bookstore thrive for nearly five decades, with aspirations to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.234

In addition to her work at BookWoman, Post has a background in education, having studied at Stephen F. Austin State University.5 Her efforts have earned her recognition as a significant figure in Austin's literary scene, where she is celebrated for her advocacy and contributions to women's literature and LGBTQ+ rights.46
