Steven P. Cohen, MD, is a prominent figure in pain medicine and research. He is currently the Edmond I Eger Professor of Anesthesiology and vice chair of Research and Pain Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.2 He also holds positions as Director of Pain Research and Professor at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.13
Dr. Cohen obtained his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, completed an anesthesiology residency at Columbia University, and a pain management fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.1 He has made significant contributions to the field of pain medicine, including:
- Developing an FDA-approved technique for treating sacroiliac joint pain1
- Inventing the intravenous ketamine test for guiding treatment in chronic pain patients1
- Conducting the first studies on epidural administration of biological agents for pain1
His research has been widely recognized, with over 250 peer-reviewed articles published in top medical journals.14 Dr. Cohen's work has been featured in the New York Times Science Section on four separate occasions.1
As a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, Dr. Cohen has been deployed four times to Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.12 His research has influenced military pain management, contributing to the passage of the 2008 Military Pain Care Act.12
Dr. Cohen has received numerous awards for his contributions to pain medicine, including the American Society of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine John J. Bonica Award and the American Academy of Pain Medicine Founder's Award.1
