Steve Sinton is the current owner of Avenales Cattle Co, a 140-year-old family ranch in San Luis Obispo County, California. The Sinton family has been ranching the Avenales and Canyon Ranches since 1875.13
Steve Sinton is the son of Jim Sinton, who was born James Bernard Sinsheimer in 1916. The family name was changed from Sinsheimer to Sinton around World War I.4 Steve Sinton is the sixth generation of the Sinton family to manage the ranch.3
Steve Sinton and his son Daniel currently oversee the 18,000+ acre Avenales and Canyon Ranches, which includes the 120-acre Shell Creek Vineyards.12 The ranch focuses on sustainably raising cattle for a grassfed beef program, with all cattle certified organic and GAP4.1
In addition to ranching, Steve Sinton is the co-founder of the California Rangeland Trust, an organization dedicated to keeping ranchers ranching and protecting open spaces.35 He has hosted many University of California Cooperative Extension tours on the ranch over the past 40 years.2
