    Sonya Lee

    Producer | Director | Science Communicator

    Sonya Lee is a producer, director, and science communicator with a focus on stories at the intersection of science, nature, and people.

    She is currently working on producing, directing, and writing a 44-min Canadian broadcast film on CBC Nature of Things, mentored by Jeff Turner and Chelsea Turner of River Road Films.

    Prior to this, she served as the Science Producer for Ocean School, where she produced various media pieces related to ocean education.

    With a background in Marine Biology and International Development Studies, Sonya is dedicated to sharing research outcomes through science outreach materials.

    She works on stories with a social justice lens, amplifying historically marginalized voices and communities, and also leads Science Communication Workshops nationally and internationally.

    Sonya is part of the Reelworld Producer Accelerator Program for BIPOC Producers in Canada and is a 2021 Jackson Wild Media Lab Fellow.

    In addition to her filmmaking and producing roles, Sonya is a certified Commercial SCUBA diver, PADI Divemaster, and is pursuing certifications as a TDI tech diver and PFI freediver.

    She splits her time between the east and west coasts of Canada, currently residing on Vancouver Island.
