Silvia Crivelli
Staff Scientist at the Berkeley Lab and Executive Director of the MSSE program at UC Berkeley
Silvia Crivelli is a computational biology scientist and Program Manager 2 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), as well as an Associate Researcher at UC Davis.1 She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1995 and has since been working in the field of computational biology.1
Dr. Crivelli's research interests are twofold:
- Bringing scientists together to tackle complex biological problems
- Developing interactive information modeling tools for exploring health and disease mechanisms
She has conducted research in protein structure prediction, protein scoring, and bioimaging.1 Dr. Crivelli is known for creating and leading the WeFold collaborative project, which aims to address roadblocks in the field of protein structure prediction.1
In addition to her research, Dr. Crivelli has been involved in various roles:
- Former Executive Director of the Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) program at UC Berkeley2
- Long-standing member of the CASP (Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction) community1
- Pioneer in building and running open collaborative efforts within the CASP community1
- Leader in developing innovative molecular modeling tools like ProteinShop and DockingShop1
Dr. Crivelli has authored more than 30 papers across various STEM fields, including parallel computing, molecular visualization, optimization, mathematical modeling, and machine learning.1 She is also passionate about mentoring students, particularly those from underrepresented groups in STEM.2
Throughout her career, Dr. Crivelli has worked on interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with biologists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians for over two decades.1 Her work has contributed to advancements in understanding complex biological systems and developing efficient computational methods for protein structure prediction and analysis.13
