Dr. Shirley McCartney, originally from Rutherglen, Scotland, holds a Ph.D. from the University of St Andrews and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biology (Microbiology) from Glasgow Caledonian University. She ventured to the United States in 1992 for post-doctoral training at the Vollum Institute, OHSU, Portland, Ore.
